Feasts, Festivals and Galas.
Hunslet folk, historically, are a jolly, fun-loving lot, as proved by the proliferation (at various times) of their feast, festivals, galas and fairs - in short, any excuse for a celebration or get-together of some sort!Hunslet Feast used to be held on Hunslet Moor, at August Bank Holiday, and at one time it was held at Penny Hill and Church Street. The old feast was a combination of market stalls, funfair and other fairground attractions. In latter years, the "Feast" was exclusively a commercial fairground attraction, and was a ten day event held in May, at the Parkside ground. The last of the old-fashioned, traditional "feasts" was held in 1953. Hunslet Gala was revived in September of 1981 by the Hunslet Nelson Sports Club and Hunslet Boys Club, after an absence of 47 years. At that time, it was a three day event, and was held at the Nelson Sports Club Ground on Low Road. In 1987, it was organised by Hunslet Community Forum, and was a one day event held on Saturday 20th June, at Hunslet C of E Middle School and Hunslet Parish Church.Hunslet Carnival Hunslet Carnival was revived on September 4th, 1976, the last one prior to that being in 1939.
