Hunslet Industry

(add other memories of Hunslet)
At one time, Hunslet had many mills, which kept the population in employment. Many of these no longer survive.
The Hunslet Engine Co.was Founded in 1864, shortly after it's formation, the company went into partnership with another great Leeds firm, Greenwood and Batley. The first locomotive they built was for Bassy and Ballard, and this was used in the construction of the Midland Main Line from Sheffield to St. Pancras.
The first overseas order was in 1866, and went to Java, Indonesia. Another, much stranger order went to Indonesia in the 1970's - a locomotive specially designed to burn coconut shells! It was later converted to diesel, but is still going strong today.
The Hunslet Engine Company was taken over in 1995 by J. T. Qualter Hall of Barnsley, but the famous name was kept.Hunslet Potteries. The old Ordnance Survey maps of Leeds show an area south of the river called the Potteries. This refers to the fact that several pottery-making firms operated in that area in the 18th and 19th centuries, amongst them the famous Leeds Pottery, and also the Hunslet Pottery.
Hunslet Hall Potteries was founded in 1800 by Samuel Rainforth, and was located on the corner of Hunslet Hall Road and Beeston Road (a continuation of Meadow Lane). It was first called Rainforth and co., and the pottery it produced was of an inferior quality to the nearby, and better known, Leeds Pottery. Samuel Rainforth died in 1817, and in 1818, the pottery became known as Petty and Co., Samuel Petty, it is thought, being the partner of Rainforth.
The pottery had various owners, and was at one time known as the Victoria Pottery. There was also in 1826, for a very short time, a retail outlet at 135 Briggate. The business finally closed down in 1881
