Hunslet Pubs

Hunslet has a rich history when it comes to drinking. Sadly, many pubs were lost during slum clearance programmes of the 1960s. Here are a few of them, with apologies to the many I've missed out, due to space. Perhaps an enterprising person would like to write a book about the pubs of Hunslet?
The Garden Gate, built around 1820, is one such. With it's elaborate facade in soft bronze coloured tiles, this pub was ripe to become one of Tetley's heritage inns, and was designated as such in 1982. It became the Garden Gate in 1849 due to it's location near the market gardens, and became a Tetley's pub in the 1960's, when the council planned to demolish it and redevelop the area. It was saved by a public campaign and Hunslet was redeveloped around it.
It became Joshua Tetley's 12th Heritage pub on 6th August, 1985
Not to be confused with the Gardener's Arms on Beza Street. This once stood in splendid isolation on Hunslet Moor, and was originally a house and shop belonging to one Isaac Bailey, a gardener, seedsman and shopkeeper. The shop became a beerhouse some time during the 1850's, and by the 1870 White's directory of Leeds, it was listed as The Gardener's Arms Beerhouse, 22, Beza Street, Hunslet Moor, proprietor William Bailey, beerhouse keeper and shopkeeper.
The Punch Clock, Thwaite Gate. A relative newcomer, in terms of pub history, but one with it's own particular quirkiness. Back in 1983, the pub manager decided to install a real punch clock by the door, for the regulars to clock on and off. This proved a hit, particularly with wives wanting to know where their spouses were! The pub took its name from the punch clock that tram drivers once used when they arrived in Hunslet from Leeds. The last tram to Thwaite Gate ran on 18th April 1952.
The Parnaby Tavern, on the corner of Middleton road and Pepper Road, was once called the Cemetery Tavern, due to it's proximity to Hunslet Cemetery. However, in 1956, the then licensees, Mr. and Mrs. Hart, decided that this was far too depressing a name for a pub, and renamed it the Parnaby Tavern, after the street names round about.
