Hunslet Sports

Sport and entertainment Parksiders Rugby teamThe Hunslet Rugby Club, or "Parksiders", as they were known, was formed on 21st May 1883, with a grant of £30, which had been obtained by the Hunslet Cricket club. The players initially wore blue and white quartered shirts, but this soon changed to their familiar white shirts with chocolate coloured badges. Their first fixture took place on 11th February 1888, when they played and beat Mirfield. The game took place on their new ground, which they had christened "Parkside". Amongst the early players were five brothers all from the same family, the Goldthorpes. The youngest one, Walter, won a Challenge Cup winners medal in 1910. Another early player was Lucius Banks, a black American serviceman, who was spotted playing American football by one of the Hunslet committee. He was signed up and shipped over in 1912, but reaction to him in the local press was mixed, and many felt that his signing was a crowd-pulling exercise which was denying local players the chance to play for Hunslet. Rather ironic, in these days of international footballers being bought and sold all over the world! The Parksiders enjoyed man y successful games, both at home and abroad, but the 1960's and 70's saw dwindling attendance figures, and problems both on and off the pitch. Their last game was played at Parkside on 21st April 1973.
